LEVITICUS – LESSON NINE

(Chapters 19-20)


 Living a holy life before God demands we treat others justly. Obeying the Ten Commandments, the Israelite would be holy before God. In this lesson we will see how the commandments through Moses were applied, and be impressed with how serious God is regarding His revealed Law as we see the death penalty being applied when God’s commandments are disobeyed.


IX. LAWS REGARDING HOLINESS TOWARD GOD AND RIGHTEOUSNESS TOWARD MAN (Chapters 19-20)

A. Reason for holiness – Jehovah is holy and is God (19:2)

B. Reverence for parents – fifth commandment (19:3)

C. Keep the sabbaths – fourth commandment (19:3)

D. Prohibition of idolatry – first and second commandment (19:4)

E. Peace offering – cannot be eaten on third day (19:8)

F. Parts of land and vineyard left after harvest for the poor and the sojourner (19:9-10)

G. Prohibition of stealing – eighth commandment (19:11)

H. Prohibition of cheating and lying (19:11-12)

    1. Profaning the name of God – third commandment

 I. Prohibition of taking advantage of neighbor (19:13-14)

    1. Cannot keep wages from hired servant overnight

    2. Cannot curse deaf; nor put stumbling block in front of the blind.

J. Justice must be rendered in judgments – no partiality (19:15)

K Prohibition of tale bearing – no gossiping (19:16)

L. Prohibition of false accusations – leading to death (19:16)

M. Must not hate – must rebuke neighbor in sin (19:17-18)

    1. Cannot bear a  grudge or take vengeance – love neighbor as self

    2. If no rebuke – bear sin.

N. Prohibition of mixing two kinds of animals and fiber (19:19)

O. Law concerning sexual relations with a slave woman betrothed (19:20-22)

    1. No death penalty

    2. Trespass offering offered – sin forgiven

P Fruit of trees planted in Canaan not to be eaten until fifth year (19:23-25)

    1. In fourth year, fruit is holy unto Jehovah.

Q. Prohibition of eating blood (19:26)

R. Prohibition of various magical practices (19:26, 31)

S. Prohibition of marring hair and flesh – relating to grief (19:27-28)

T. Prohibition of profaning daughter – making her a harlot (19:29)

U. Must keep sabbaths and reverence sanctuary (19:30)

V. Must reverence aged – rise before hoary head, honor face (19:32)

W. Must show kindness to stranger – once stranger also in Egypt (19:33-34)

X. Must use just measurements (19:35-37)

Y. Punishments and promises connected with laws (Chapter 20)

    1. Give seed to Molech – put to death (20:1-5)

        a. God against man and his family if people do not put the man to death.

                2. Turn to deceptive magic or practice it – cut off from among his people;    stoned to death (20:6-7, 27)

                3. Curse father or mother – blood shall be upon him (20:9)

    4. Sexual sins of adultery, incest, homosexuality, bestiality – all participants put to death (20:10-11)

    5. Keep all of God’s commandments and be a people separated unto God – will enjoy land flowing with milk and         honey (20:22-26)

        a. If not – land will vomit you out of the land like it did the previous nation.
