JUDE – LESSON TWO

INTRODUCTION:

 Jude continues to characterize the false teachers in verses 11-19.  Through comparisons of historical people and nature, Jude exposes the heart of the ungodly men who are threatening the spiritual health of Jude’s readers.  In this lesson we will learn of their character and their ultimate ruin.  They went . . . they ran . . . they perished; Woe to the false teacher (v. 11).

I. THE CHARACTER OF THE FALSE TEACHERS EXPOSED THROUGH THE USE OF EXAMPLES (v. 11-16)

A. Three examples of individual wickedness culminating in perishing (v. 11):

     1. Went the way of Cain (Gen. 4:1-8).

    2. Ran riotously in the error of Balaam (cf. Num. 22-25, 2 Pet. 2:15, Rev. 2:14).

    3. Perished in the gainsaying of Korah (cf. Num. 16:1-35).

B. Examples from nature (v. 12-13) (cf. 2 Pet. 2:17-18, Prov. 25:14, Isa. 57:20).

C. Ungodly character and consequent judgment forseen by Enoch (v. 14-15)

    (cf. Gen. 5:21-24, Heb. 11:5).

D. The false teachers plainly characterized in heart, in words and deeds (v. 16).

JUDE – LESSON THREE

INTRODUCTION:

 Jude does not throw up his hands in defeat before the false teachers but arms his brethren with final instructions that will keep them from apostasy. Being engaged by remembering the apostles’ warnings, building ourselves up in our faith, praying, saving others while ever acknowledging the glory of God will equip us today as it did in Jude’s day to defeat the evil influence and words of false teachers.

I. FINAL EXHORTATIONS TO COMBAT APOSTASY (v. 17-25)

A. Remember the warnings of the recent apostles – mockers will appear      (v. 17-19)

1.Walk after own ungodly lusts

2. Make separations – encourage a different way from the way revealed by the Spirit.

3. Have not the Spirit.

        B. Looking to self: (v. 20-21)

                1. Building self up in one’s holy faith

                2. Praying in Holy Spirit

                3. Keeping self in the love of God.

                4. Looking for coming of Lord in mercy unto eternal life

       C. Working to help and save others (v. 22-23)

                1. On some have mercy who are in doubt.

                2. On some save-snatching them out of the fire

3. On some have mercy with fear – hating the garment spotted by the flesh.

       D. Giving Glory to God – Amen (v. 24-25)

1. Acknowledging God’s power to keep us from stumbling and then present us before him without blemish with great joy.

2. The only God and Saviour through Jesus Christ our Lord deserves:

    a. glory

    b. majesty

    c. dominion

    d. power  

3. Acknowledging God’s eternal nature – deserving of glory for all time.
