JOB: LESSON EIGHT


INTRODUCTION:

 In this lesson we observe Elihu interjecting his opinion concerning Job's problem with suffering.   The younger Elihu presents his speech in two parts (32-33; 34-37):  He addresses the friends of Job and then job in each section.  He argues that Job should see his suffering as chastisement to deliver him from final destruction.

VIII. ELIHU'S SPEECH (32-37)

 A. Youth (Elihu) politely answers age (chapter 32).

  1. Elihu frankly addresses Friends (32:1-16).

  2. Elihu will supply deficiency of Friends' arguments (32:17-22).

 B. Elihu addresses Job (chapter 33).

  1. Takes exception to Job's assertions (33:1-12).

  2. Sufferings are chastisements to improve and enlighten (33:13-24).

  3. Proper spirit to receive chastisements (33:25-30).

  4. Opened to hear Job's objections (33:31-33).

 C. Elihu addresses Friends concerning Job's assertions (Chapter 34).

  1. Job sees God as unjust in not explaining what is happening to Job (34:1-9).

  2. God cannot be unjust - not accountable to man (34:10-33).

  3. Job speaks out of ignorance (34:34-37).

 D. Elihu answers Job's complaint (Chapter 35).

  1. Reviews again the complaint: Life of righteousness has not brought correspondent          blessings (35:1-8).

  2.  Job's requests of God not answered because of lack of humility (35:9-14).

  3. Job condemned for his arrogance (35:15-16).

 E. Great Revelation of the Glory of God (Chapters 36-37).

  1. Elihu claims to speak with Divine authority (36:1-4).

  2. God is merciful and just (36:5-16).

  3. Warning of Job's perilous position (36:17-25).

  4. Illustration of electric storm - the thunder of God's voice     (36:26-37:5).

  5. Further manifestations of God's majesty in nature (37:6-13).

  6. Job cannot explain or duplicate these manifestations of God's glory (37:14-21).

  7. Appeal to Job to bow before God's majesty (37:22-24).
