HEBREWS – LESSON 1


I. GOD’S SON: HIS DEITY AND HIS HUMANITY (Chapters 1 & 2)

 

A. God has spoken unto us in His Son (1:1-3)

1. In old time God spoke to the fathers in the prophets (v.1).

2. At the end of these days - The Son (v.2-3)

a. Appointed heir of all things.

b. Through whom God made the worlds.

c. The effulgence of God’s brightness

d. The image of God’s substance

e. All things upheld by the power of His word.

f. Made purification for sins

g. Sat down on the right hand  of God.

B. The Son is Better than the Angels – Has inherited a more excellent name (1:4-14)

            1. God never addressed any angel as His begotten Son ( v. 4-5, Psm. 2:7)

            2. God commanded His angels to worship the firstborn (v.6).

            3. God’s angels have a divine mission – God’s Son has an eternal throne of Righteousness (v.7-9).

4. The Son is the eternal Jehovah or the Lord who laid the foundation of the world and the heavens are the works of His hands. He has no end – the heavens and the earth will perish (v.10-12, Psalm 102:25-27).

5. God never has declared to any angel to sit on His right hand till He has made all enemies as a footstool (v. 13, Psalm 110:13).

6. The purpose for God’s angels: to do service for those who inherit salvation (v.14).

C. Exhortation to give more earnest heed to the Word preached (2:1-4).

            1. Lest we fall away (v.1).

2. Cannot avoid just recompense from transgression – Cannot escape if we neglect so great of salvation (v.2-4).

a. Spoken through the Lord (v.3)

b. Confirmed to us by those who heard (v.3)

c. God bears witness through miracles (signs, wonders, and powers), and miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to His will  (v 4).

D. God takes on flesh and blood to rule over the world to come of salvation (2:5-18).

1. The creative work of God’s hands willed to be subjected to man – not angels (v.5-8, Psalm 8).

2. God becomes man, a little lower than the angels, to save man from sin (9-11)

a. Jesus tasted death for every man (v. 9).

b. Jesus through suffering brings many sons to glory (v.10).

c. Jesus not ashamed to call those He sanctifies, “brethren” (v. 11).

3. God takes on flesh and blood to deliver man from the fear of death – not angels (v. 13-16)

E. Jesus becomes like His brethren to be a merciful and faithful High Priest (v.17-18).

1. Makes propitiation for the sins of the people.

2. Suffering in temptation to succor them who are tempted.
