GENESIS – LESSON ELEVEN


I. ABRAHAM AND ISAAC THE SON OF PROMISE (Gen. 21-23)

A. The Birth of Isaac as Jehovah had promised (21:1-7)

B. Abraham adheres to Sarah’s request to send Hagar and Ishmael away (21:8-21)

1. Son of handmaid not to be heir with Sarah’s son.

2. God tells Abraham not to be grieved – In Isaac shall his seed be called; God will make Ishmael a nation.

3. God saves Hagar and Ishmael from death in wilderness of Beersheba.

4. Ishmael dwells as archer in wilderness of Paran – Sinai Peninsula.

C. Abimelech makes covenant emphasizing kindness with Abraham (21:22-34)

1. Abraham reproves Abimelech’s over his servants taking well .

2. Covenant made emphasizing that Abraham dug the well : place called Beersheba (well of seven).

3. Abraham plants tamarisk tree and calls on the name of Jehovah, the Everlasting God .

D. God Tests Abraham: Offer up Isaac, his only son of promise (22:1-19)

1. God instructs Abraham to offer up Isaac as a burnt offering in land of Moriah.

2. God stays Abraham’s hand – provides Ram for sacrifice.

3. Seeing Abraham’s obedience, Jehovah renews promise of blessing to Abraham

E. The Family of Nahor: Abraham’s brother (22:20-24).

F. Sarah dies at the age of 127 in Hebron (23:1-2).

G. Abraham purchases burial place for Sarah from Ephron the Hittite: cave of the field of Machpelah (23:3-20).
